HDD's near locks

Visser & Smit Hanab have recently executed 2 Horizontal Directional Drillings (HDD's) near the Zandvliet- and Berendrechtsluis (lock) in Antwerp, Belgium. The HDD's are part of a cable route of approximately 10 kilometer between two electricity switching stations of Elia.

The HDD's, which are constructed parallell from each other with a distance of 10 meter in between, was commissioned to Visser & Smit Hanab BV (the Netherlands) by the joint venture Visser & Smit Hanab NV (Belgium) and Fabricom.

The length of the HDD's were 1.278 meter and 1.338 meter and the maximum drilling depth was approximately 45 meter.

After the pilot drilling, the boreholes were reamed (enlarged) till respectively 42" and 32". After the reaming phase Visser & Smit Hanab pulled in a bundle of 5xHDPE 250mm SDR9 (HDD1) and a bundle of 4xHDPE 250mm SDR9 (HDD2).

The length and the horizontal bends made that these HDD's were not the most simple ones. However, as expected, the HDD crew of Visser & Smit Hanab succesfully executed the project and did that in a safe and controlled manner.
