Arc-drilling in Strijen
In 2015, PPS (Petrochemical Pipeline Services) undertook a major maintenance project on the Pipeline Rotterdam-Beek (PRB). Visser & Smit Hanab was awarded the contract to carry out repair and replacement work at various locations, for the purpose of which ‘arc-drilling’ was undertaken in Strijen.
Arc-drilling is a variant of Horizontal Directional Drilling. This technique involves mechanical pre-curving of the pipe prior to insertion, in this case an 8” medium transport pipe with a length of 92 metres that was inserted directly into the drilled hole. Two assembly welds were also carried out during the insertion process.
This method allows a considerably smaller radius to be drilled and the required drilling length is shorter.
