Construction of two Outfalls in Greenland

For our customer TELE Greenland A / S Visser & Smit Hanab conducted successfully two outfalls using HDD technology. A fine piece of work: not only the granite surface, working in the Arctic also poses specific challenges.

These conditions ensure that icebergs forces a break in a telecommunications cable every year. In order to avoid this, the customer decided to protect this cable. Visser & Smit Hanab therefore realized two conduits where winter elements have no control over. That took place on the edge of the Greenland Sana Bay, near the town of Nuuk.

The project consisted of the installation of two boreholes by a surface of granite. Both holes have a length of approximately 1,150 meters and are 200 meters below the water surface.  At the drilling,  the crew installed a steel drill pipe (conduit) which serves as a casing tube for the telecommunication cable. In addition, they braved extreme weather: cold, wind, snow and even a polar bear.

After the withdrawal of the tubes, a ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) located and checked the ends of the conduits.

In short: the installation of the outfalls were completed successfully and to the satisfaction of TELE Greenland A / S.
